Lorenzo Buhne is a songwriter and performer whose eclectic musical history includes punk rock and 15th-century ballads. Born in Naples, Italy, Lorenzo immigrated to Australia as a teenager, where he began to play classical guitar and bass. After turning professional aged 18, he was recruited to play for the American United Service Organisations during the Vietnam War. He later moved to Los Angeles, working with musicians from all over the world, including Rock en Espanol producers Gustavo Santaolalla and Anibal Kerpel, Gabriela, Leon Gieco, and Jorge Gonzales of Los Prisoneros.
Lorenzo played in the LA punk scene, joining legendary punk band FEAR, and recording More Beer and Live for the Record. He then signed on with The Dickies, playing on nearly a dozen albums and touring extensively throughout the US and Europe. Upon the release of Oznerol, his first solo effort, Billboard magazine proclaimed him ‘the crown prince of punk’. He fronted his own band, Oznerol, as well as an Italian new wave band, Il Culto. He also worked extensively as a producer with LA bands of all types, and recorded pieces for film.
In 2003, he moved to New Zealand to raise a family, and found himself revisiting the Neapolitan traditions of his childhood. In 2005, he released Sotto Sopra, (Kpodaudio) a collection of Italian pop and experimental songs inspired by his father’s poetry. In the same year, he formed Lorenzo & La Cura, a six-member group performing songs from the southern Italian folk tradition. He is currently at work on a follow-up album titled Buon Giorno.
