Te Huka a Tai

Te Huka ā Tai is one of Te Papa’s four Discovery Centres. Discovery Centres are colourful, vibrant, inviting places, specifically designed for children and families to visit, and are full of hands-on exhibits and games as well as magazines and books. Visitors are encouraged to explore, touch, play, ask questions, research and learn.
Te Huka ā Tai has a Māori focus, allowing tamariki (children) to try their hand at weaving a kākahu (cloak) or a bright fish to take home. There are stilts, rakau (stick) games and you can record your mihimihi (greeting). Here you can see a huge waka (canoe), colourful fish, and other artworks made by tamariki from Whanganui schools. There are fabulous taonga (treasures) on display, both old and new, and a research room where you can find magazines, reference books, CD Roms, selected websites, and Tai Awatea | Knowledge Net - our user-friendly multimedia database.
