More than thirty works of art have just gone on show at Te Papa as part of the museum's flagship art exhibition Toi Te Papa Art of the Nation on Level 5. The works are on display in two separate focus areas of the exhibition.
Aspects of abstraction replaces Kura kura Ngai Tahu in the Contemporary Focus segment and features recent acquisitions by Chiara Corbelleto and Julian Dashper alongside works of senior practitioners Don Driver and Milan Mrkusich.
The exhibition, curated by Te Papa’s contemporary art curator Charlotte Huddleston, presents works that engage with abstract forms to explore colour, line, and texture, through material and composition. Aspects of abstraction spans the period from 1978–2008 and provides insight into abstraction over three decades.
In a clear light, the new Collection Focus segment, showcases a selection of abstract and realist works from the 1960s and 1970s – a time when many different strands emerged in New Zealand art and the existence of a specifically New Zealand style was much debated.
With works by Don Binney, Michael Illingworth, Richard Killen, Ian Scott, Gordon Walters and Robin White, In a clear light draws two strands of art together: the national and international, the realist and the abstract. Curated by William McAloon, curator of historical New Zealand art, this exhibition replaces the Colin McCahon Collection Focus segment in Toi Te Papa Art of the Nation.
