Update - November 2008

The next funding round of the Museum & Iwi Development Grant closes Friday 16 January 2009.

The Museum and Iwi Development Grants Programme supports museums, iwi, and other culture and heritage organisations in projects that are part of a long-term plan and that:

  • contribute to achieving operational excellence
  • improve access to and understanding of collections and taonga
  • develop partnerships.

The Museum and Iwi Development Grants Programme is administered by National Services Te Paerangi. We are a unit within Te Papa, and our mission is to strengthen the museum sector by providing practical and strategic help to museums and iwi throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

Who do we work with?

National Services Te Paerangi works with museums, art galleries, whare taonga, tribal museums, cultural centres, historic places, and science, interpretive, or exhibition centres. If you are involved in collection care, public programmes (including exhibitions), education, or community relationships, this grant may help you.

What kinds of project do we support?

In 2008, we are supporting projects that demonstrate that the applicant is:

  • working together with other organisations to develop strong, active partnerships
  • working with iwi to develop bicultural policies, practices, and governance structures
  • working with collections and taonga to achieve a high standard of care and documentation.

We give preference to projects that will be supported in the long-term.

Examples of projects that we will consider include:

  • collaborative promotion and marketing
  • digitisation projects
  • the development of iwi taonga databases
  • the establishment and coordination of regional museum and heritage networks
  • projects that improve dialogue between museums and iwi, and vice versa.

Examples of projects that we have supported in the past include the following:

  • Marlborough Historical Society received a grant to develop pathways to engage with iwi and to assess the priorities for the care of their taonga collection.
  • Heritage West Coast received a grant to develop a promotional brochure for cultural organisations and heritage sites on the West Coast.
  • Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti Trust received a grant to develop a digital database and information management system for taonga from the Aitanga-a-Hauiti region.
  • Central South Island Museums Group, an informal collective of museums in North Otago and South and Mid Canterbury, received a grant to develop a joint promotional brochure, a one-day digital imaging workshop, and a one-day regional network forum.

What don’t we fund?

We have a limited pool of funds to distribute each year. As a result, we cannot accept grant applications for:

  • capital projects (for example, building projects and major redevelopment projects)
  • capital items (i.e. any item that lasts longer than 12 months and costs more than $500 exclusive of GST)
  • projects that have already been completed
  • projects from businesses or profit-making entities
  • vehicle purchases
  • loan repayments
  • seed funding
  • overseas travel
  • core activities already funded by the local authority, membership fees, and so on
  • general operating expenses, equipment, and salaries
  • the acquisition or conservation of artworks or artefacts
  • projects supported by other funders, including oral history projects.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for this grant, you must represent a legally constituted non-profit organisation such as an incorporated society or a charitable trust. If your organisation does not hold legal status, you may need to work with an ‘umbrella’ organisation to put in your application.

Can whānau or hapū apply?

We prefer that whānau and hapū apply for this grant through their legally constituted iwi organisation. It will strengthen your case if that organisation supports your project for the duration of the contract (usually up to 12 months). We encourage whānau and hapū to consider the aim of their project within the broader iwi strategy – how the project helps to develop the iwi as a whole.

For further information or to discuss your project, please contact Rhonda Paku, Manager Iwi Development: rhondap@tepapa.govt.nz or freephone 0508 678 743.
